Abstract
The rapid expansion of the New Space Economy is reshaping the market toward orbital sustainability, establishing In-Orbit Servicing (IOS) and in particular the Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) as critical technologies for enhancing satellite operational life. However, the feasibility of these missions depends on high levels onboard autonomy to bypass the latency of ground-based control. Specifically, effective energy transfer to non-cooperative targets necessitates robust identification and tracking capabilities tailored to the absence of active client support. Addressing these challenges, this thesis proposes an autonomous optical navigation framework specifically designed for the WPT solutions developed by ORiS. The research focuses on overcoming the limitations of classical navigation by integrating space-based sensors with advanced image processing algorithms, ensuring precise target detection in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) even under significant orbital uncertainty and background noise.
The methodology adopted is based on a multidisciplinary approach that combines optical design, orbital mechanics, and computer vision
