This thesis focuses on the adaptive reuse of the Haji Mohammad Jafar Bathhouse in Rasht, Iran, which is a structure from the Qajar period where its use has become less relevant due to changes in the lifestyle of today. Even though it underwent restoration, it still has not been activated. The project explores the possibilities of re-integration of the historic bathhouses by applying the same principles of space, environment and sensory experience to new uses. Through studying the type of bathhouse, Qajar period architecture and bathing rituals, key characteristics such as hierarchy of spaces, temperature changes and significance of water are determined as the essential design elements.
