Abstract
This thesis examines the applicability of Bocco and Habert’s concept of a “vernacular architecture of the 21st century” through the case study of Naturdorf Bärnau, a four-unit experimental holiday housing compound located at the German–Czech border. The conceptual framework defines four criteria for a contemporary vernacular: use of local resources, low environmental footprint, fulfilment of contemporary users’ expectations, and affordability to local communities. A systemic investigation of the as-built condition was conducted using verified project documentation. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), in accordance with ISO 14040 and EN 15978, was performed for modules A1–A4 using the ÖKOBAUDAT (2024-I) database. Climate impacts were determined following the EN 15804+A2 standard, utilizing IPCC characterization factors to calculate Global Warming Potential (GWP).
Biogenic carbon storage was assessed separately following EN 16449
