Abstract
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent synthetic contaminants widely detected in wastewater biosolids due to their resistance to conventional treatment processes. Their environmental persistence and potential health impacts have increased the need for effective treatment strategies capable of reducing PFAS concentrations in biosolids and in the resulting solid products. Thermal conversion technologies, particularly pyrolysis, have emerged as promising approaches for PFAS mitigation. This thesis investigates PFAS destruction and fluorine capture during the pyrolysis of municipal biosolids. Experiments were conducted in a vertically agitated continuous pyrolysis reactor at temperatures of 500 °C and 650 °C, with solid residence times of 15 and 30 minutes.
