Abstract
Hardware security is an essential yet underserved area of cybersecurity education. While a mature ecosystem of browser-based Capture The Flag (CTF) platforms exists for software vulnerabilities, hands-on hardware training remains locked behind significant barriers: a basic workstation with multimeter, logic analyser, and serial adapters costs hundreds of euros, expendable target devices must be sourced and replaced, and pro- fessional courses charge between 3,000 and 8,000 EUR per participant. Existing in- termediate solutions—remote laboratories, episodic hardware CTF competitions, and single-architecture emulators—require dedicated infrastructure, physical kit shipping, or fail to reproduce the board-level workflow that defines real hardware analysis: inspecting a PCB, probing test points, wiring a serial adapter, and dumping firmware.
This thesis addresses that gap by presenting PCB-CTF, a web-based interactive cyber range for hardware security training in CTF format
