Abstract
This thesis investigates the design and validation of adaptive brake pedal characteristics for brake-by-wire systems, with the objective of improving the coherence between driver input, vehicle response, and perceived pedal feel. In electronically controlled braking architectures, the absence of a direct hydraulic connection makes it necessary to reproduce a natural and predictable brake sensation through the control strategy itself. For this reason, the study focuses on the definition of a travel-to-torque characteristic able to balance modulatability in low-demand braking with promptness under more severe braking conditions. A bilinear pedal mapping is adopted as the reference solution and then extended through two adaptive logics.
The first adapts the braking characteristic according to road friction conditions, while the second modifies the response based on the driver’s recent braking behaviour
