The transformation of former industrial and port areas has become a relevant focus in contemporary urban development along waterfronts, raising questions about participation, governance, and the preservation of local identities. This thesis investigates the ongoing redevelopment of Refshaleøen, a post-industrial island in Copenhagen (Denmark), focusing on how participatory processes and public, private, and commoning-oriented agendas shape its transformation. Particular attention is given to the role of local communities, cultural initiatives, and temporary users, exploring whether and how small actors can influence decision-making processes within a large-scale redevelopment project. The research also examines the tension between preserving Refshaleøen’s creative and experimental identity and the potential risk of gentrification associated with future development.
