Abstract:

Today, Computational Fluid Dynamics and Aeroacoustics are fundamental for the development and optimisation of industrial and commercial devices, therefore, their coupling in commercial software has been widely validated and improved over the last years. They were also used in this project to analyse the flow-induced noise of a commercial multi-stage centrifugal pump developed by DAB Pumps. The study was carried out in Siemens, which provided the software package Simcenter STAR-CCM+, used to build up the model and run the simulations required. This thesis is structured in four main parts: the first where the general acoustic theory is explained focusing on the human perception of the noise, the second where the numerical method applied in the simulations are showed, the third where the methodology followed in order to properly build up the model is described step-by-step, and finally the last one where the obtained results are showed. The main noise sources were detected and some geometry modifications were proposed in order to decrease the flow-induces noise, with the possibility of further investigation to deepen the topic and further improve the acoustic of the pump without affecting its performance.
