Abstract
A panorama is a type of painting, that has been patented by Robert Barker in 1787, and which has reached its popularity in the 19th century. Its circular form allows the artist to depict wide vistas, giving the spectator an impression of standing in the middle of a town, a battlefield or a no longer existing ancient city.
The aim of this thesis is to analyse in depth the art of panoramic paintings, in particular the work of Jan Styka, the Transylvanian Panorama, and to propose a design for a museum to exhibit that masterpiece. The original painting has been cut into pieces by its creator, and subsequently sold with no record of how many fragments there are. The following work is divided in two parts.
Part one starts with the general history of panoramas. First, the origins of the technique are being discussed, together with the possible inspirations and the specifications of the developed art form. Then, the study moves to list the still preserved 19th century panoramas. Furthermore, modern techniques of the 21st century panoramas are being discussed, as well as the contemporary ways of displaying the works.
Three case studies have been chosen to analyse the exhibition facilities, their compliance with the patent, and modern techniques for creating and displaying panoramic vistas. The first case study, the Thun Panorama by Marquard Wocher, has been chosen as an example of the oldest preserved panorama. The second one, the Raclawice Panorama, has been painted by the same artist as the object of this thesis-Jan Styka. The last case study is a contemporary, multimedia panorama of Pergamon, created by Yadegar Assisi.
The case studies are followed by a chapter dedicated to the Transylvanian Panorama, its author and connection with the chosen location.
The first part is then concluded with a solution on how to display a no longer existing painting using modern technology.
The second part of the thesis is devoted to the project of the Transylvanian Panorama Museum, which is an outcome to the conducted research.
