Abstract
ABSTRACT
The street is the outside space that shapes our daily life. We rely on it to get us somewhere; it connects us. Furthermore, the street is the place where anything can happen; a social encounter, finding a small street market, enjoying a daily activity. The study of the street means to understand the most important public space of the city. The research project described herein attempts to understand how the street becomes an urban space -a livable space- and the design elements that make it a successful space in the city. The scope of the research goes from a general overview of the street to the study of e specific case represented by Via Flaminia, one of the most important historical axes of Rome, le approach to the research is divided into two parts; 3t a theoretical, historical and referential investigation; d a second part that includes a focused analysis of Via Flaminia and concludes with the application of this analysis tie design of a masterplan and an architectural project this chosen street. The first, theoretical part begins i a review of key concepts that are related to the street, h as ‘urban space’, ‘the street’ and ‘placemaking’.
Major critics and theorist of urban planning and architecture are studied and analyzed in this section, and their perspectives on the social realm of the street and the overall design of the street are considered.
Jane Jacobs, Allan Jacobs, William H. Whyte, Donald Appleyard, and Rob Krier are some of the authors studied here. With a conceptual basis in place, the study progresses to the analysis of referential cases; these case studies are streets that have become urban spaces and exemplify the application of the previous concepts in real life. The second part focuses on the study of Via Flaminia, its configuration and evolution, and its importance as urban space. The analysis revealed that Via Flaminia is a space that could have been a great urban space but did not fully evolve, mainly as a consequence of neglect. As a result, this street currently presents problems in its image, it lacks a clear identity and continuity. To conclude, a masterplan intervention and an architectural project are presented.
The proposed masterplan seeks to solve the limited permeability of the street and attempts to provide continuity to its image. It exploits the repurposing the existing building typologies with new social, cultural and recreational functions. The main goal of this masterplan is to convert this street into a revitalized cultural node of the city. The architectural project focuses on a critical point of the street, addressing the connection of the city with the surrounding nature.
