Abstract
Preface
The research question origin has to be found in the Agostino Magnaghi’s drawing. Realized in 1987 for the Triennale di Milano, it shows an uncommon suggestion for the area in the north of Turin, where the industrial empty plots along the boulevards sides are characterized by new public buildings.
Nevertheless the research work about the chapter number five of Turin’s Atlas has in a certain sense influenced that choice. The tollgate of 1853 was for a long time the physical and jurisdictional boundary of the city of Turin and the urban memory of its historical phase is not easy to recognize: the tollgate buildings, except for one case2, were demolished during the years thirties of the twentieth century. With them also their memory in the urban scenery was deleted, except for the system of boulevards, which replaced the tollgate route.
Along the boulevard it is possible to recognize some of the main buildings realized starting from the half of the nineteenth century: hospitals, military barracks, civil function building, but also some of the most famous examples of industrial architecture. So all these buildings have a central role in the city working principles, except for the dismissed factories run out their beginning function.
From the personal study experience Gran Torino graduation studio is not the first research field where is used the methodology, based on the analysis and of the architectural drawing. Also in bachelor thesis circumstance it was possible to apply the same kind of logical instrument to analyze the city, especially in context of the central neighbourhood of San Salvario. Despite that in this case the logical research construction is deeply developed. Through the theoretical approach it is possible to answer to the starting questions, in order to understand, using a scientific method, the process behind an urban phenomenon.
However if the theory’s support could be considered an important phase for the research development, at the same time its limit is embodied by the difficulty to translate the theoretical principles into a coherent architectural design. For this reason it is important to define an intermediate stage between the theory and the project. The guidelines could be consider a general strategy that works on the two aspects: it is at the same the translation of the theoretical principles in a great scale drawing and it introduces the project on the fragment, showing in detail the interpretation of the two research sub-theme questions.
