Abstract
This work is part of the core challenge which wants to ensure measures between the vehicle body panels meet quality standards before physical prototypes are built. To address this, a systematic approach is adopted. This is called Dimensional Management and we are able to achieve the goal trough the Tolerance Chain Analysis (TCA) process. At Italdesign, assembly simulations with accurate measures analysis are performed using 3DCS (3-Dimensional Control Systems) software and the results are then visualized in a VR environment (Autodesk VRED) through a dedicated commercial plugin: nViz Perceived Quality Plugin. In this process there is a considerable complication: the 3DCS output data formats are incompatible with the ones required by nViz plugin.
Because of this constraint an extremely time-consuming and error-prone manual process of data extraction and refactoring is required, which is even more difficult because there is not any visual guidance in the process of understanding the data
