Business incubators and accelerators are essential pillars of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, providing startups with resources, mentorship, and access to networks. In Italy, however, the population of active incubators and accelerators contracted from 262 organizations in 2022 to 203 in 2024, a cumulative reduction of 22.5%. While the existing literature has extensively addressed incubator success and performance, limited research has investigated the drivers behind incubator cessation. This thesis addresses that gap through a qualitative investigation conducted in collaboration with the Social Innovation Monitor at Politecnico di Torino. Out of 59 incubators that ceased activity, motivations were mapped for 33, and 22 of them participated in structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.
