Abstract
Multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles are increasingly used in outdoor applications, where their aerodynamic and flight-dynamic behaviour is affected by atmospheric wind and turbulence. Although quadrotor modelling and control are often studied under idealized or indoor conditions, real low-altitude operations expose the vehicle to unsteady inflow, gusts, and direction-dependent disturbances that modify propeller loading and require continuous compensation by the flight controller. This thesis investigates the influence of atmospheric conditions on the response of a quadrotor platform, with particular attention to the relationship between the measured wind field and the motor RPM variations commanded by the onboard controller. The study is based on an outdoor experimental campaign conducted at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics using a Holybro X500 V2 quadrotor equipped with a Pixhawk 6X flight controller.
The three-dimensional wind velocity is measured by a LI-550P TriSonica™ Mini ultrasonic anemometer mounted on a fixed pole near the flight region, while the drone telemetry provides time-resolved motor RPM, attitude, inertial, and altitude data
