Abstract
Traditionally, the end of life has been met with several challenges. Specifically, this has been evidenced by the saturating effect that traditional urban burial sites have, as well as the carbon footprint generated from cremation. In the broader context of Turin, Italy, traditional city-owned cemeteries can run into serious problems due to their limited physical space; in addition, the cremation of each body produces approximately 400 kg of CO2 and emits other pollutants into the atmosphere. To investigate these imperatives through an architectural lens, this Master’s thesis explores an alternative spatial paradigm by proposing a Human Composting Complex. The project introduces the speculative deployment of Natural Organic Reduction (NOR)—a controlled, aerobic biological process designed to minimize environmental footprints and regenerate biomatter.
The proposed experimental facility would exist within the specific context of Cimitero Parco di Torino and would serve as an intervention to provide an alternative modern practice that is not yet legal in Italy, ultimately assisting in the continued civic function and circular economy of the existing modern facility within the metropolitan area
