Beyond paper and pencil: validation of a multimodal technological framework for evaluation of pediatric visuospatial attention.

Abstract
The assessment of visuospatial attention, a fundamental executive function relying on the dorsal visual stream, is critical in pediatric populations with neurodevelopmental conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI). Traditional paper-and-pencil evaluations like the Modified Bells Test are limited by operator dependency, static outcomes, and an inability to distinguish pure visual attention deficits from visuomotor integration issues. This study develops and validates a high-resolution digital extension of the Modified Bells Test by integrating a remote eye-tracker and the Techpad, a novel multisensory device developed at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), focusing on a standardized baseline of typically developing children to objectively quantify task performance, spatial exploration, and cognitive states during visual search.
