Rel. Paolo Maggiore, Francesco Civerra. Politecnico di Torino, Corso di laurea magistrale in Ingegneria Aerospaziale, 2026
Abstract
Mars exploration is a topic of increasing interest, with a growing number of robotic missions planned for the coming decades. In this context, the design and analysis of reliable propulsion systems play a fundamental role in ensuring mission success. This thesis presents the development of a simulation model of the propulsion systems of a Mars Lander and its Carrier Module. The work is based on current European Space Agency (ESA) requirements for future Mars exploration missions, taking the MEDal mission concept as a reference and drawing from the analysis of configurations and mission profiles of past missions, such as Mars Science Laboratory.
The propulsion systems were modeled using EcosimPro, with particular focus on the European Space Propulsion System Simulation (ESPSS) toolkit
