Abstract
The kidneys perform numerous essential regulatory functions, including the ability to purify the blood, maintain electrolyte balance and a physiological pH, and when these are no longer properly carried out, acute kidney injury (AKI) appears, a clinical condition that represents a risk factor for morbidity and mortality, which causes the death of about 2 million people per year and whose long-term effects lead to the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). There are several renal replacement therapies (RRT), the most widely used is Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) which, through an extracorporeal circuit which includes a semipermeable filter, allows removal rates of solutes and toxins in a continuous, gradual and slower way compared to intermittent haemodialysis, thus closely approaching the physiological condition.
The evaluation of filter performance, intended as the ability to remove specific solutes and biomarkers, is essential to optimize treatment and personalize therapy
