Abstract
In the end of my study in the Polytechnic University of Turin, as a thesis has to be done and since February I began to consider it. But after all I want to introduce myself a little bit which might make it more clear about my theme and my aim for my thesis.
I was born at Shanghai in 1982. There was no skyscraper, no metro, even almost no private cars. I passed my childhood during the end of planned economy. It was still used the coupon for food and everything. I grow up and lived in Shanghai until 2009 like every young people who was born the 80th. Elemental school with TV, first black-white then colorful, middle school with all the street game machines, high school I got my first computer and was possessed by the games, after the stressful entrance exam I entered the University and spent most of the time chat online and online games. In 2003 I was graduated and got a job easily because the booming construction period. After changed 3 jobs in the first year, at last I settled down in a architecture studio per more than 5 years as a structure designer.
In Europe it took more than a century to go through what happened in China. In less than 30 years Shanghai now has double skyscrapers than New York and longest metro before London and the biggest port in the world. I did moved 5 times house with my parents and then I rented 2 different room after I began to work.
Even I grow up with the Beatles and Roxette, has so many foreign friends in Shanghai, the culture shocks were still obvious after I began to study in Italy. When I first arrived for me Europe and US were quite same but now I really can tell the difference from various parts of Europe. I met a lot of people and I talked to them, I studied, I changed 3 cities , I travelled almost everywhere in West Europe and some of the east part.
Now I am at the end of my study and tried to write a thesis. For Italy China is still really far and curious even for our professors. But since a large amount of materials could be found about the economy and even land use transformation of China and Shanghai. Here I want to pay more attention about the culture transit, which is really difficult if you don’t know the both culture of China and the west world. Shanghai is my city, my heart, and it is a Chinese city but it was also an European city and now it is becoming a global city.
With the help of the Professor Rossignolo, I tried to find out all sorts of cultural problems happen during the dramatic change in China and Shanghai, and tried to find a possible solution for it. I know it is a hard one, an almost impossible one. But by using my personal experiences as long as the reading process, I hope I will let Italy and Europe understand better China and let China to learn and benefit from the long history planning and cultural practice.
At last of my thesis I will imagine the future China and Shanghai and what the cities will be like and how to get there.
