Abstract
This research is aimed to analyze the Urban Divide phenomenon in a developed country city. The case study focuses on the city of Turin, Italy. More specifically the research addresses the key question by identifying which are the terms of the phenomenon that can be recognized in the town. By definition Urban Divide is the differences between rich and the poor neighborhoods over a range of data which includes income and consumption inequality; statistics on health, education, hunger, employment opportunities as well as spatial segregation. Urban Divide or urban disparity is one of the most important issue that has arisen in recent years as the world is becoming more and more urban.
According to the UN forecasts, by 2030 there will be twenty-one megacities in the world, most of them settled in the developing countries
The research follows a specific methodology based on the analysis of statistical data such as demography indicators, employment rates and education level, as well as plans and projects that recently have been provided by the Municipality. To be able to find out the evidence of the phenomenon inside the city the research has been based on a specific scale of analysis: the city wasn't analyzed as a whole, but by Districts (Circoscrizioni). This specific scale factor was considered as appropriate to give a complex and complete picture of thè internai city context. The expected outcomes of thè analysis and thè study of the public recent interventions were aimed to find two districts that are experiencing different social conditions. The results of the studies point out to a strong division between the first district (Centro, Crocetta) and the sixth (Barriera di Milano, Regio Parco, Barca, Bertolla, Falchera, Rebaudengo, Villaretto).
The research is divided into three chapters: in the first one the urban divide phenomenon has been analyzed in its theoretical side, mainly through thè study of the UNHABITAT 2010 report, which focuses on the issue and its implications in the developing countries. The second chapter focuses on the specific case study through the statistical analysis. The last part of the research is chapter three where the outcomes of the previous points are critically compared to identify the practical implications of the urban divide in the districts.
