Led by fast-paced technological development, diversification strategies have always been dominant among the major players of the telecommunications industry. Telecom Italia, now TIM, constitutes a notable example of diversification, as it currently operates in all domains of fixed and mobile telecommunications. However, in the last few years, TIM has increasingly diversified in the neighboring IT industry, chiefly by building its own datacenters and offering cloud computing services. This dissertation analyzes the rationale of such a strategic choice, in order to evaluate the competitive positioning and future prospects of TIM in this growing market.
