Abstract
The decarbonisation of the building sector requires the large-scale deployment of renewable energy technologies that can be integrated into the built environment. Among these, Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) offer a promising solution by generating electricity while utilising existing building surfaces without additional land use. In Northern European countries, where rooftop areas may be limited and solar irradiation differs significantly from lower latitudes, facade-integrated photovoltaics have gained increasing attention. In this context, bifacial photovoltaic technology can enhance energy production by harvesting solar radiation on both sides of the module. This thesis presents a techno-economic framework for assessing building-integrated bifacial photovoltaic systems installed on south-facing vertical facades in Helsinki, Finland.
The methodology combines optical, electrical, thermal and economic analyses to evaluate the performance and feasibility of bifacial facade-integrated photovoltaics under Nordic climatic conditions
