Abstract
Smooth surface features, or humps, were recently found to stabilise stationary Crossflow Instabilities (CFI) in swept-wing boundary layers, making them a promising technique for passive laminar flow control. The aim of this thesis is to facilitate further research in this area through the design, commissioning, and assessment of a new setup capable of morphing smooth surface features on a spanwise-invariant swept-wing model. The morphing setup is made by three main components: the pre-existing spanwise invariant symmetrical wing model, modified with an internal cavity on one side, a motorised assembly housed within the cavity, driving twenty independent vertically moving actuators, and a silicone rubber skin connected to those actuators.
The influence of the generated surface features on the laminar turbulent transition is assessed through infrared thermography measurements, while the resulting surface geometry is verified through laser distance measurements
