SACRED URBANISM: Regenerating Tirupati’s Heritage Nodes and Pilgrimage Routes Tirupati is one of the most significant pilgrimage centers in India, serving as the gateway to the sacred hills of Tirumala, drawing millions of pilgrims annually. While Tirumala is globally recognized for its spiritual significance, the city of Tirupati itself has evolved into a transient urban space, functioning primarily as a transit point rather than a destination in its own right. This has led to the neglect of Tirupati’s rich heritage fabric, fragmented pilgrimage routes, and degraded water bodies that once defined its spiritual landscape. This thesis proposes a regeneration framework rooted in the concept of Sacred Urbanism, seeking to reconnect the city’s heritage nodes and revive pilgrimage routes through sustainable and culturally sensitive urban design interventions.
