Abstract
This Master Thesis, result of a collaboration between Politecnico di Torino and Dumarey Automotive Italia S.p.A., deals with the experimental characterization of a Li-ion battery cell and the subsequent development of a physics-based (or electrochemical) model, capable to capture the main features of cell's behavior (terminal voltage, current, efficiency, thermal effects), as function of the operating conditions (external temperature, charge/discharge patterns). The real cell under study is a Kokam Lithium-ion pouch cell, with 11 Ah capacity, catalogued as High-Power NMC/graphite cell. Regarding the software environments, PyBaMM, a Python-based open-source tool, dedicated to the creation of electrochemical models for battery-cells, was selected for modeling and simulations.
Among the physics-based models, SPMe (Single Particle Model with electrolyte) was adopted as the reference battery model for the Thesis
