Abstract
BIM and Construction Project Management for Photovoltaic Systems in Industrial Buildings Large industrial buildings represent one of the more underused opportunities in commercial decarbonization. Roof areas are vast, daytime energy loads are predictable, and the economic case for on-site solar generation has strengthened considerably as module costs have fallen and EU ETS allowance prices have risen. Yet conversion rates for industrial photovoltaic retrofits remain low — and the constraint is rarely technical. The binding problem is organizational: structural assessment, energy modelling, layout design, and cost estimation each occupy separate software environments, and keeping them synchronized demands constant manual re-entry. Repositioning a panel row to satisfy a load limit or clear a maintenance corridor propagates through multiple disconnected tools, generating hours of rework across disciplines.
This recurring overhead is referred to throughout this thesis as the iteration penalty, and the central aim is to eliminate it
