Lagrangian CFD Modelling of Oil-Jet Lubrications for High Speed Gears.
Rel. Daniela Anna Misul, Massimo Rundo. Politecnico di Torino, Master of science program in Mechanical Engineering, 2026
Abstract
Lubrication technologies are a key factor in improving the performance and reliability of mechanical systems, particularly rotating components such as gearboxes. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the potential of a CFD solver for the simulation of oil-jet lubrication impingement on a gearbox, using the commercial software Particleworks. The main distinctive feature of the solver consists in its computation algorithm, based on the MPS (Moving Particle Simulation) which allows to model complex geometries and moving boundary problems through a mesh-free approach. Therefore, computational costs are significantly reduced in terms of both preprocessing effort and simulation time. The core of the study is carried out on a single-gear system, which is used to validate the optimal numerical setup and to assess the capability and limitations of the software for oil-jet lubrication analysis.
Firstly a comparison between all the pressure and viscosity solvers available in Particleworks was necessary to avoid the break-up of the oil-jet and ensure proper lubrication
