The Pioneer Platform, developed by the Biomedical Optics Research Laboratory (BORL) in Zurich, enables time-resolved near-infrared optical tomography (NIROT) imaging in human including neonatal brains. The system relies on a 32 × 32 Single-Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) sensor called Piccolo. For high quality images, it is important to have a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and to obtain a maximum of late photons, because these enhance the depth sensitivity. One important limitation of the SPAD sensor is its dark count rate (DCR): the rate at which the detector registers photons in the absence of light. Since there are few late photons, they can be masked by the DCR, and this leads to low depth sensitivity.
