Abstract
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a chronic disease characterized by the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin due to the irreversible destruction of pancreatic beta-cells. As a consequence, patients must rely on exogenous insulin administration to maintain blood glucose levels within a safe physiological range. Adequate glycemic control is essential, as poor regulation may lead to acute complications, such as hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, as well as long-term organ damage. Carbohydrate ingestion induces rapid and significant increases in blood glucose concentration, making prandial insulin management one of the most challenging aspects of diabetes therapy. In current clinical practice and in most commercially available systems, meal-related information is manually provided by the patient.
This requires estimating the amount of ingested carbohydrates and reporting meals at the correct time
