Abstract
Emerging from centuries of migration and colonisation, Port Louis slowly developed as the island’s principal colonial port as well as the point of arrival for enslaved Africans and indentured labourers from India. These people collectively shaped the modern Mauritian society. Key sites such as Aapravasi Ghat, the Central Market and Government House can still be found today in the historical area of Port-Louis. This historical core in itself, constitutes a living archive of the nation’s origins and holds profound historical, cultural, and symbolic significance. Despite its important role in the development of modern Mauritius, the historical district of Port-Louis today shows strong architectural and spatial dissonance.
Colonial-era buildings coexist with poorly integrated new concrete constructions
