Abstract
While Avery Gordon writes of haunting as the spirit of abusive systems of power making themselves known through everyday life, heritage sites reveal that spirits needn't all be evil. This paper studies the city of Guanajuato—a UNESCO World Heritage city in central Mexico—and the many ghosts that haunt its narrow and irregular alleyways, streets, and piazzas, demonstrating that ghosts can carry not only unresolved trauma and conflict but also pride, tradition, and the memory of the daily life of a resilient population. The uniqueness of Guanajuato's urban landscape, as well as its historical particularities as a colonial city, made it the perfect space for legends and magical storytelling to grow.
This paper seeks to examine through the lens of a heritage architect the relationship between spirits and space as well as the symbiotic relation the two can have when it comes to the preservation of legends and intangible heritage
