In recent decades, the technologies and requirements for the construction and maintenance of tunnels have changed to improve several aspects, both in the construction phase and in the operational phase. In order to take these aspects into account, not only the way of designing and building new infrastructures has been changed, but it is also necessary to take action on existing infrastructures to satisfy new requirements in terms of safety, efficiency, sustainability, durability. The need to carry out renovations has led manufacturers and designers to search for the best available technologies and methodologies, with the aim of achieving the fastest, cheapest, and least impacting modes of intervention.
