Best practices and technology scouting in the field of AgriTech.

Abstract: |
The exponential growth of population and demand represents a challenge for modern agriculture. To meet this demand, there are technologies that can be applied in the fields to increase production and reduce the time, labor, and number of workers. Previous studies have primarily relied on a general explanation of the different approaches that can be applied by farms using IoT devices to solve or improve conditions for specific problems. Some others focus only on defining some IoT devices and explaining the challenges that farmers face when they decide to adopt such technologies. By conducting a technology scouting of IoT devices through a literature review and analyzing use cases from two main sources - scientific articles and gray literature - the best practices through 2017 to 2022 are to be identified. In this thesis, use cases from 40 different countries were analyzed. Greece is one of the countries with more experience in the implementation of agricultural technology (AgriTech) projects, accounting for almost 14% of all analyzed use cases. A complete solution should include not only the investment in the individual devices, but also the infrastructure needed to install and deploy the innovative technologies to remove one of the biggest barriers for farmers: incompatibility between devices and the format in which they store their data. |
