Study of S1000D Standard for Augmented and Virtual Reality Applications.

Rel. Giorgio Guglieri. Politecnico di Torino, Corso di laurea magistrale in Ingegneria Aerospaziale, 2019

The use of innovative technologies such as Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality for aircraft maintenance training field aims to minimize the costs of training on complex machines allowing instant knowledge and easier accessibility. Furthermore, Virtual Reality leads to a training approach that is not possible with the physical elements, by the construction of simulated scenarios that cannot be tested in the real world. TXT e-solutions has experimented these technologies in internally or externally funded projects and currently sells solutions based on AR / MR / VR in different sectors, mainly in aeronautics. In particular, the company is developing training solutions for aeronautical maintenance personnel with which the student can interact with the vehicle in a totally virtual way. The purpose of this thesis is to study the S1000D aeronautical standard and its grammar as to design and implement a mapping to AR / MR / VR software solutions. After a preliminary introduction of state of art in aircraft maintenance training, the mapping is made on three different levels: syntactical (analysis of the procedural XML Schema), semantical (maintenance text in simplified English) and visual (from publication and illustration layout to virtual environment). In a regulatory environment which is not specifically adapted to these new technologies, the aim is to aspire the following goals: to obtain internationally recognized neutrality and be ready to reach a wide market target; to implement an automatic processing model towards the 3D animations already present in the software; to consolidate and improve the human learning requirements of virtual procedures.
