Abstract:

China's urban development is shifting from large-scale construction to improving existing spaces and adjusting new developments. The State Council issued guidelines for transforming urban villages in megacities, emphasizing industrial upgrades, market-driven resource allocation, and human-centered urbanization. Kanglu Village, a garment-making urban village in the Pearl River Delta, is the focus of this study. The research examines the small-batch quick-return garment production chain, a post-Fordist model deeply connected to the village's social fabric. However, this model is under threat from urban renewal. The study argues for preserving the production model and community structure while proposing alternative renewal methods to large-scale demolition. The theoretical research analyzes the small-batch quick-return unit across seven dimensions, focusing on mixed-use modes and using the open block theory for design. Three key strategies—economic viability, balancing production and residential needs, and regulatory compliance—are proposed. Prototype designs explore new forms for garment clusters in Kanglu Village, blending production and residential spaces. This paper offers insights into a more sustainable and diversified renewal model for urban villages, emphasizing economic and spatial considerations for decentralized garment production.
