Abstract: |
The Pathway towards net-zero Carbon in copper mines This thesis examines how copper mines can reduce their carbon emissions to zero, a process known as achieving net-zero. Copper mining has traditionally been a significant source of CO2, so finding ways to minimize these emissions is crucial. The research begins with a review of existing studies and past efforts to cut down emissions in the industry, providing a solid base for understanding the challenges and possible solutions. It also looks closely at copper mines that are currently working towards net-zero, offering valuable insights into the methods they're using, the obstacles they face, and the progress they've made so far. One of the major hurdles in reaching net-zero emissions in copper mining is dealing with technological and financial limitations, navigating complex regulations, and fitting renewable energy into mining operations. An important part of this thesis is how it uses Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a method that helps measure and analyze the carbon footprint of mining activities from start to finish. LCA helps identify where the most emissions are coming from and suggests where changes can be made to reduce them. By combining information from past research, current case studies, and LCA results, the thesis offers a clear path towards net-zero carbon emissions for copper mines. This path includes adopting new technologies, working together within the industry, and encouraging government policies that support these changes. This work is valuable not just for researchers but also for people working in the copper mining industry, pointing the way to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. |
