The aim of this thesis is to design, develop and test a See Through system, based on ITS G5 Vehicle-to-Vehicle communications. The See Through is part of the cooperative Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (co-ADAS), which are ADAS that rely, besides the onboard sensors, on information coming from other road users. It is aimed to assist the driver in the overtaking maneuver. In a scenario where two cars follows each other, the See Through establish a video connection between two vehicles, which enables a car to see, on an onboard screen, the video coming from the vehicle that precedes it. This way it would be possible to literally “see through” the vehicle in front of you, enabling a clear perception of what lays ahead, and thereby helping in evaluating whether to overtake or not. This will consent to start the overtaking maneuver only when it is safe to do so. In this thesis work a modular system design concept is described that allows to customize and tune the system, so that it is suitable for the given research purpose. The selected system components are presented and it is described how the system was implemented. Further on the process of the video streaming optimization is outlined in detail along with the tuning performed to obtain a reliable stream. Finally, the test scenario design and the evaluation of the optimized system performance are presented. An outlook and a summary of the user experience conclude the thesis report.
