Abstract
Medication non-adherence has already widely been reported in past studies to severely affect public health, by reducing the pharmacotherapy efficacy and causing severe health dangers. The objective of this thesis is to develop and optimize colorimetric and fluorometric enzymatic reactions to detect the presence of selected chemicals in urine. Such reactions, when implemented in a microfluidic assay as the ones here designed, might allow for the assessment of medication compliance in patients subjected to therapeutic treatments through the generation of optical codes in the microdevice. The final goal is to assess medication adherence level of patients through point-of-care tests which have the advantages of being cheap, fast, accurate, reliable, easy to be used and difficult to be counterfeited.
