Abstract: |
INTRODUCTION Exarchia is and always will be a special place in the center of Athens. With its unique history and its different way of living, it sure is considered the most alternative neighborhood of Athens and Greece in general. Unfortunately, it is a place where its dark past, and some brutal incidents that have taken place there over the years, have led to a bad reputation and isolation of the neighborhood. Guided by the media, most of the people in the center of Athens and throughout the city in general, are afraid to even get near the area, and of course tourists never learn about the neighborhood even though it is next to one of the main touristic attractions in Athens, the Archaeological Museum. But Exarchia is so much more than a "rebel without a cause" , as the media chooses to name it. This neighborhood has a huge history in so many different levels; in a political level, in an intellectual level, in a social and humanitarian level. It is a shame what the reputation and the overall image of the neighborhood is for the people. Because of it, the municipality does not do much to make things better for the people living or working there. The neighborhood is mostly left to survive on its own. This is one of the main reasons why this project exists. It is time people learn to understand this neighborhood. It is time people get to know this neighborhood and realize what it has to offer. Exarchia needs a change, something that is going to bring people closer to it, and will give them the chance to understand why the people that choose to be there are so loyal to this place |
