Abstract
ABSTRACT
How to design today a contemporary urban block in the periphery of Rome? This is the main question that I tried to answer in this thesis.
The study begins with a first analysis of the comparison between the compact city and the sprawl city. After that we'll try to analyze the urban fabric and the urban blocks in various parts of Rome.
The observation of the neighborhood of Ostiense and its varied composition suggests a classification of the urban fabric as a union of fragments. The design concept aims to create such a new fragment for the suburbs of Ostiense. The fundamental characteristics of the fragment taken into account are the morphological identity, the connections and the perception. These characteristics are then further investigated in the following chapters through the use of several case studies.
After a careful analysis of the Ostiense neighborhood through urban expansion cards and a more perceptive analysis, through the use of photographs, we'll arrive at the project formulation. The project will be defined by starting from the conception of a masterplan and going down the scale, with the definition of a superblock and the apartments.
