Web browsing includes many background requests that most users do not see or pay attention to. Many web pages communicate with advertising networks, analytics services, social media platforms, and other external organizations. Since these communications happen behind the browser interface, users often have a limited understanding of which companies and organizations receive information while they browse the web. This thesis evaluates the results of using AwEE in a controlled in-class experiment. AwEE is a browser extension that uses gamification mechanisms to highlight privacy-related activities on the web and make them easier for users to understand. Before doing the experiment, we reviewed AwEE and made several improvements to it.
