Plant Specific Techno-Economic Assessment of Net-Zero Methanol in the U.S.

Abstract
Methanol plays a crucial role in the chemical industry due to its ability to be synthesized from diverse feedstocks and its potential as a clean fuel and energy carrier. This study utilizes facility-specific data from 11 existing U.S. plants to model strategies for cost-effective net-zero methanol production. Seven decarbonization pathways are evaluated: Business-as-Usual (BAU), Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) via point-source and direct air capture, Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU), and biomass-based routes. A comparative techno-economic and environmental assessment reveals significant trade-offs in energy consumption, cost, and CO2 emissions. Without policy support, BAU methanol costs approximately $245/t. CCS with point-source capture (CCS-PSC) emerges as the most cost-effective decarbonization route at approximately $385/t, whereas electricity intensive CCU pathways exceed $815/t.
