Abstract
The post-socialist housing estates of Central Europe face a common question: what comes after the panelák, the prefabricated concrete housing blocks of the socialist era? As these ageing buildings reach the end of their lifecycle, the default answer has too often been demolition followed by higher, denser building. This thesis proposes a different answer for the Karlovo site, a south-facing hillside on the edge of the Sásová district in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, which were selected for the «Karlovo Living Landscape» design competition promoted by Terraviva Competitions. Here a socialist housing estate meets the protected foothills of the Nízke Tatry National Park.
The threshold position frames the central design problem: how to build a neighbourhood that mediates between urban fabric and protected landscape, denser than the forest yet lighter than the estates it adjoins
