Abstract
This thesis presents a finite element assessment of support configurations for the DTT cryostat thermal shield system. The study focuses on the structural response of the cylindrical, dome, and top-cover thermal shields and their support members under gravity loading, prescribed thermal loading, and combined gravity and thermal loading. The cryostat body and thermal shields were represented using shell elements, while the G10-CR support members were represented using beam elements. The support interfaces were modelled using bonded, joint-based, and no-separation connection definitions in order to represent the intended load transfer and allow relative motion where required by thermal contraction. A reference configuration with 20 mm diameter support members was first analyzed.
The results showed that gravity loading governed the main support member stresses, while thermal loading governed the overall deformation field
