Abstract
This thesis provides a patent landscape analysis of lithium-ion traction battery recycling technologies in the automotive domain. Motivated by the rapid electrification of mobility, the strategic value of battery materials, and tightening regulatory frameworks (such as the EU Batteries Regulation), the study utilizes a reproducible structured search on Lens.org. A final dataset of 1,013 Simple Patent Families was constructed and analyzed. The empirical results reveal a sharp acceleration in patenting activity post-2016 and post-2020, currently dominated by the United States and international (WO) filings. Technologically, while hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical routes remain dominant, pre-treatment and direct recycling are emerging as critical niches for process integration and compliance.
The organizational landscape is moderately fragmented, indicating that innovation spans the entire multi-step recycling chain
