Iterative Preliminary Design of a Tube-Launched Drone.
Rel. Paolo Maggiore. Politecnico di Torino, Corso di laurea magistrale in Ingegneria Aerospaziale, 2026
Abstract
The recent development of unmanned aerial vehicle capabilities has been driven, once again like much of today’s technology, by the necessities of the modern battlefield. However, the lessons learnt and recent advancements can also be applied to civilian applications, lowering costs and expanding the capabilities of first responders and law enforcement agencies. This thesis addresses the iterative design process of a tube-launched reusable drone, intended for scenarios where dispersed sensor deployment, in-field repairs and recharging, and long endurance are key operational requirements. Despite the growing interest in this class of systems, available performance data remains scarce, as the vast majority of existing tube-launched platforms are developed for military purposes and their technical specifications are either undisclosed or classified.
Starting from a target mass derived from payload requirements and a statistical survey of existing systems, multiple prototypes were developed and evaluated in OpenVSP, assessing the aeromechanical soundness of each configuration
