Abstract
In order to reach the extreme densities and temperatures required for a fusion reaction, laser energy is exploited to irradiate a fuel target from all directions, generating plasma on its surface. As this plasma expands outward, it drives the remaining material inward and produces a highly compressed state at the target center, creating favorable conditions for fusion reactions to occur. This approach is known as inertial confinement fusion because the time over which these reactions can take place is determined only by the inertia of the imploding plasma. Shock wave propagation in multi-material targets is fundamental to understand material behavior under the extreme conditions relevant to inertial confinement fusion.
In this context, low-density polymer foams are of particular interest for target design, although their thermodynamic response to shock compression remains poorly characterized
