This thesis investigates the phenomenon of reshoring among Italian manufacturing firms, examining whether and under what conditions firms that had previously relocated production stages abroad subsequently reversed those decisions. Over recent decades, the fragmentation of production across global value chains became a dominant strategy for firms seeking to exploit international cost differentials. Yet the accumulation of experience, the emergence of hidden operational costs, and a series of major supply chain shocks — most notably the COVID-19 pandemic — have increasingly led firms to reconsider the sustainability of highly dispersed sourcing strategies. Despite growing interest in reshoring, the empirical literature remains largely based on surveys and aggregate data, leaving a gap in the systematic measurement of reshoring at the firm level from observable trade flows.
