Abstract
Road safety remains a major challenge for modern transport systems, with human driving behaviour continuing to represent one of the main contributing factors behind traffic accidents. Speed radars are widely deployed as road safety interventions aimed at reducing speeding-related incidents; however, previous research suggests that drivers often adapt their behaviour in complex ways around enforcement infrastructure, potentially generating unintended effects that may partially offset their expected safety benefits. At the same time, Connected Vehicle (CV) data offers new opportunities to continuously monitor real driving behaviour at high spatial and temporal resolutions, enabling more advanced approaches for road safety analysis. This thesis develops a multi-layered analytical framework to investigate the effects of speed radar positioning on road safety and driving behaviour using Connected Vehicle data, through a real case study conducted in Spain.
First, a reactive macroscopic methodology is implemented to identify the most suitable case study area by analysing accident records around radar locations across the Spanish territory
