Abstract
In the recent decades, interest in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology has grown significantly, making the study of gust encounters a prominent research topic. Since these vehicles operate at low altitudes, they are constantly exposed to highly non-uniform and unsteady flows characterized by severe atmospheric disturbances, such as vortex gusts. They can severely affect flight stability when the gust velocity exceeds the free-stream velocity; here the ratio between these two quantities is denoted as the gust ratio. However, their characterization has so far been investigated only in water towing tanks or modelled numerically; to fill the gap, the present work introduces a new experimental set-up designed to generate isolated vortex gusts in a wind tunnel.
